Testing the Reference-dependent Model: An Experiment on Asymmetrically Dominated Reference Points
نویسنده
چکیده
Standard choice theory assumes choice to be independent of the point of reference. Based on a number of studies which challenge this assumption, Tversky and Kahneman have proposed a reference-dependent model which captures the in ̄uence of reference points on individual choice. If choice is reference-dependent, switching the reference point so that it is ®rst dominated by x and then by y increases the likelihood of choosing y. Switching the location of an asymmetrically dominated reference point without altering the dominance relationship should also in ̄uence reference-dependent choice in a predicted manner. In this paper the reference-dependent model is tested in two experiments which focus on asymmetrically dominated reference points. The results of these experiments give further con®rmation to the reference-dependent model. # 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Behav. Dec. Making, 11: 181±192, 1998.

Understanding the reference effect
This paper explores how a change in a default—specifically, an exogenously given reference point—affects individual preferences. While reference dependence is extensively studied, very little is known regarding the impact of reference points on individual choice behavior when the reference points themselves are not chosen (Reference Effect). We identify critical properties that differentiate be...
متن کاملSelection of suitable reference genes for real-time PCR studies of early developmental stages of sturgeons
In quantitative real-time PCR, the mRNA level can be quantified in relative terms based on the expression ratio of mRNAs of the target gene and an internal reference gene. Since, an internal standard should be expressed at a constant level among different tissues of an organism at all stages of development, and should be unaffected by the experimental treatment, the stability of different refer...
متن کاملDiscrete Choices and the Trade-off between Money and Time: a Test of the Theory of Reference-dependent Preferences
We formulate a model of reference-dependent preferences based on the marginal rate of substitution at the reference-point of a reference-free utility function. Using binary choices on the trade-off between money and travel time, reference-dependence is captured by value functions that are centered at the reference. The model predicts a directly testable relationship among four commonly used val...

متن کاملReference Values for Serum Total Cholesterol Concentrations Using Percentile Regression Model: A Population Study in Mashhad
Background and Purpose: Serum total cholesterol (TC) concentrations are affected by several factors including ethnicity, diet, geographic, and environmental determinants, and are related to another disease, including hypothyroidism, and renal and liver disease. It is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly if associated with high levels of serum low-density lip...
